Environmental Officer

ROLE

We have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Environmental Officer to join us on a full-time permanent basis.

Based at our head offices in ilkeston, Derbyshire, you will be reporting to the company Director’s, effectively managing and co-ordinating Environmental activities for the company, – both at the company and on site at clients – so that all agreed targets and activities are achieved in a timely manner.

You will also provide support to our contracts / construction team by producing and delivering Environmental Plans to ensure all contracts are fully compliant. Support improvement in Quality, Safety and Environmental culture of the company, by maintaining and improving our UKAS accredited ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.

Work closely with our management team, clients, and project stakeholders to achieve contract aims, develop processes and procedures and implement good compliance management practices, advising on operational matters, coaching and mentoring to enhance Environmental performance.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Train and develop our team regarding our Integrated Management System (IMS) and legislative requirements.
  2. Manage and maintain an audit regime for statutory and environmental compliance
  3. Ensure all our staff are aware of our environmental systems of work, comply to same and have in place sufficient training.
  4. Producing and delivering of Environmental plans and subsequently monitoring these to support the achievement of operational objectives.
  5. Liaise with all levels of personnel within the company and relevant external agencies on Environmental matters to facilitate improvements for site, including but not limited to the HSE and Environment Agency.
  6. Work with our Director’s and Contracts Team to ensure the development of the positive environmental culture at our company.
  7. Lead in the verification of our Legal Compliance.
  8. Produce and deliver environmental calendar events ensuring consistency and continuous improvement e.g., Managers updates, Inductions, training, presentations
  9. Continuous monitoring and auditing of environmental systems and procedures for all sites. Where necessary, update, revise systems as required to help ensure site compliance with legislation and company policy. Importance to be given to the assistance to site management with the continuous improvement of risk assessments, systems of work and incident investigation.
  1. Manage Audit Programme for the business and all contracts to monitor compliance and ensure external accreditation requirements are being maintained.
  2. Mentor managers in our IMS System to enable them to maintain compliance – identifying trends and delivering initiatives to encourage compliance performance improvements.
  3. Support the business with the management of complex/high risk environmental issues/concerns through advice and coaching.
  4. Supporting with environmental consents / permits through applications and notifications required
  5. Assist with the production of RAMS for all work activities both at our head office workshop facility and all construction sites including high risk activities.
  6. Provide detailed monthly reports to inform management of the shaping of environmental strategy, policy and product development.
  7. Support and encourage positive employee communication processes with emphasis on engagement and communication at all levels. Build constructive working relationships locally with Site Representatives, leading or supporting meetings both at our head office or on construction sites when required.

EXPERIENCE

As the successful candidate, you will ideally have the following experience: –
  • IEMA Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management.
  • 5 – 10 years’ experience in the field.
  • Excellent understanding of the gas and oil industry  preferable.
  • Qualification / Experience of CDM 2015 Regulations.
  • Experience of operating in a complex, commercial, multi-divisional organisation.
  • Solid and up to date knowledge of practical environmental principles and practices as well as environmental legislation.
  • Experience of ISO 14001 audits.
  • In depth knowledge of statutory compliance.
  • Detailed understanding of preferably all aspects of Environmental Management system.
  • Solid understanding of construction and project related safety aspects
  • Ability to deal with people at every level

SKILLS & PERSONAL QUALITIES

The ideal candidate should hold a full UK driving licence and demonstrate the following:

  • Understanding of core environmental principles and regulations
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Well organised, good attention to detail.
  • Has ability to measure performance against internal and external benchmarks while identifying new solutions to business requirements.
  • Acts decisively in difficult business situations while maintaining focus on our business requirements and providing client satisfaction.
  • Demonstrates a readiness to make decisions, take the initiative and produce successful action plans.
  • Successfully adapts to changing demands and conditions.
  • Committed to developing others.
  • The willingness and ability to ‘roll up their sleeves’, work well amongst others.
  • Strong IT ability
  • Secure research and auditing knowledge
  • Compassion for the environment and sustainability
