ABOUT BS EN 1090 FACTORY PRODUCTION CONTROL

BS EN 1090 is a harmonised UK and European Standard that outlines the requirements for the fabrication and assembly of load-bearing steel and aluminium structures that are permanently installed.

For manufacturers and construction companies, like us that operate in the UK and EU, compliance with BS EN 1090 is essential, as it is linked to the mandatory UKCA/CE marking for structural metalwork.

PARTS OF BS EN 1090 STANDARD

The BS EN 1090 standard applies to the design, production, and assembly of steel and aluminium structures, ensuring the safety and quality of a wide range of construction projects -from bridges to buildings.

The standard governs the execution and conformity assessment of these structures and is made up of three key parts:

  1. BS EN 1090-1: Covers the requirements for conformity assessment of structural components and includes rules for UKCA/CE marking.
  2. BS EN 1090-2: Focuses on the technical requirements for the execution of steel structures, including specifications for materials, fabrication, erection, and welding.
  3. BS EN 1090-3: Similar to Part 2, but focuses on aluminium structures.

We are certified for Parts 1 and 2.

UKCA / CE Marking & Legal Requirements

Fabricated steel components are safety critical; under the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) they must comply with BS EN 1090-1 to allow the UKCA/CE marking of products. This indicates that they meet all applicable UK and European health, safety and environmental protection requirements.

UKCA/CE marking is not allowed unless products have been manufactured under a Factory Production Control System (FPC) and certified by a suitable approved accredited body such as, TÜV UK / TÜV Nord, our notified body.

Non-compliance is enforced by Trading Standards, which has authority to close down businesses that do not meet these requirements.

Additionally, because welding is part of the production process, we also implement ISO 3834-2:2021 our Welding Quality Management System (WQMS). This is in addition to our ISO 901 Quality Management System (QMS) which combined, form our fully integrated quality strategy.

As a part of the FPC system we are also required to nominate a Responsible Welding Coordinator (RWC) in accordance with BS EN 1090-1:2009 +A1:2011.

EXECUTION CLASSES (EXC)

BS EN 1090 also defines different Execution Classes (EXC1 to EXC4) based on the complexity and safety requirements of the structure:

  1. EXC1: Simple structures with low risk, such as panelled buildings.
  2. EXC2: Standard structures such as gas pipeline supports, skid unit & bridges.
  3. EXC3: More complex structures, such as high-rise buildings or large bridges.
  4. EXC4: Special structures with the highest level of risk, like Power Plants or Offshore Platforms.

We’re certified to EXC2, allowing us to fabricate a wide range of steel structures in our workshop, fully UKCA and CE marked for final installation on site.

RECERTIFICATION AUDIT

We first obtained BS EN 1090 certification in 2015 and have since been regularly audited by our Accreditation Body, TÜV UK / TÜV Nord.

Our most recent annual external surveillance audit, conducted in July, received extremely positive feedback. The auditor noted that we have a mature Factory Control System (FCS), well-trained staff, and established processes and procedures in line with the standard’s requirements. No nonconformances were identified, which is fantastic news.

We’re now certified for the next three years and will be audited again in 2027.

EN 1090 CE / UKCA Certificate

“BS EN 1090 is a critical part of our overall Quality Management System. It demonstrates our advanced skill levels and capabilities when working on the most complex and demanding structural steel projects. It proves we are fully compliant with latest regulations and ensures the structural integrity, consistent high quality and safety of all fabricated steel products. A huge thank you to the team for their relentless efforts in achieving our recertification.”

BS EN 1090 certification ensures that all steel structures we produce meet key criteria for Mechanical Resistance, Stability, Serviceability, and Durability.

It confirms that we have the best-qualified staff, equipment, processes, and control procedures. It also enables us to trace every component we use throughout the fabrication lifecycle process – from initial sourcing to final delivery of the finished product.
